High battery drain on Hearing Instruments paired with Android 12L/12.1

We have seen an issue with Android devices running versions 12.1 (on Google Pixel) or 12L (on other manufacturers), where a normal working HI will drain much faster when paired to these devices compared to normal battery life when paired with Android devices running other versions.

Please note that this is not an issue with the hearing instrument and is due to changes made in Android 12L/12.1, which was subsequently fixed with Android 13.

Android 12L and 12.1 are typically used by large screen phones, of which the following affected models are popular with users:

Android 12.1
•    Google Pixel 3a & 3a XL
Android 12L (seen as One UI version 4.1.1; Android version 12)
•    Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, S7, S8 and their variants like 5G/Lite/+
•    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 1, 3, 4 and their variants like 5G
•    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, 3, 4 and their variants like 5G

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of all affected models, but only the popular ones seen in the market.

When hearing instruments are paired with Android devices running 12L/12.1, they will remain constantly connected to the mobile device whenever Bluetooth is switched on, even when not streaming, thereby draining the HI battery 30% faster than normal.

This is not an issue with the hearing instrument and is due to changes made in Android 12L/12.1, which was subsequently fixed with Android 13. Samsung and other manufacturers' users are recommended to upgrade to Android 13 as soon as it is released for their devices.

For users currently with Android 12L/12.1 on their devices, including Pixel 3a & 3a XL where Google has discontinued further updates, please turn off Bluetooth on the phone when not streaming or using for phone calls.

Bluetooth hearing aid connection issues after updating to Android / One UI 6.x?

If you’re using a Samsung Galaxy phone on Android with One UI 6.x, you may experience Bluetooth disconnections or limited hearing aid functionality. The problem is in the phone software’s handling of Bluetooth audio profiles, not your hearing aids, as such we are working with phone manufacturers to resolve this.

Potential Resolution

Note, this workaround may not resolve the issue on all devices.

Pre-check

  • Ensure your phone and hearing aids are updated.
    • Check for Android OS updates or fixes and install them.
    • Update your hearing aids to the latest firmware.

First-step workaround - to try if updates don’t fully resolve the issue

  1. Turn off your device.
  2. Enter recovery mode:
    • Press and hold Volume Up + Side/Power button until you feel a vibration and the Samsung logo appears, then release.
    • Note: The exact button combination varies by device, so you may need to use Power + Volume Up + Volume Down or other keys depending on your manufacturer.
  3. In Recovery, navigate to "Wipe cache partition":
    • Use the Volume Up/Down buttons to highlight the option.
  4. Select it:
    • Press the Side/Power button to confirm.
  5. Confirm the action:
    • Use the Volume buttons to highlight "Yes" and press the Side/Power button to confirm.
  6. Reboot:
    • Highlight "Reboot system now" and press the Side/Power button.
  7. After reboot:
    • Re-pair your hearing aids if needed.
    • Test the Bluetooth connection to verify if the issue is resolved.
  8. If the issue persists:
    • Check for Android OS updates or fixes.
    • Update your Hearing Aids to the latest firmware
